Heartfelt Ponderings

Capital punishment: Is it a deterrent?

Capital Punishment: Is it a deterrent? A person that has committed a murder probably doesn’t have much respect for life. Does he have much respect for his own life? Is it that important to him?

I have thought for a long time that most persons with the consciousness to commit a murder are not deterred by the thought of loosing their own life. After they have performed their act they are restrained in a cushy environment with much free legal assistance to try to resolve the matter for them. They may rest there for as much as 25 years laughing at society.

They need some conditioning that they will really remember, something what will stick with them long after they have left these shores. Instead of capital punishment, a life sentence at hard labor, without possibility of parole would cause much more dread than a death penalty. While they are serving their long, unpleasant servitude, they should also be given training in morals, ethics, and given exposure to individuals with those superior qualities.

Why should we waste time, energy, and money if there will be no parole and they won’t be exposed to society again? Those that know that reincarnation exists, know that eventually this soul will return again in another body. If there has been no improvement in the characteristics this souls displays, nothing has been gained. Reincarnation also speaks against capital punishment for if a person is executed without chance to improve, he will return again with the same unwanted qualities and society has not gained. The Muslim terrorists that we see today are very likely returning souls from the seventh to fourteenth centuries. They had no chance to evolve themselves in the interim and have returned with the same repulsive characteristics.
