Many movie and TV stars have spoken about politics or religion without having any expertise in these areas. Medical doctors think they are experts on everything. They give advice constantly to patients and somehow feel they are qualified to give advice no matter what the topic. You have had a supervisor, no doubt, that expressed expertise concerning your family life.
The feeling of self-importance that arises when a person achieves authority, position, or fame makes them feel that others will respect their opinion on any subject. However a person of authority or position may have reached their level of incompetence and may not have knowledge about their topic. Just the fact that a person is a movie or TV star indicates they do not live in reality. News reporters feel that because they are well known they express fact. They go to school to learn to make their reporting look like fact. It is still opinion because everyone sees things in a different light. Does fact even exist or is everything opinion? Today people are eager to accept lies and many even seek lies so they buy right into the opinions given and accept them as fact. Our political scene is a good example.
During the Viet Nam War you saw the bumper stickers that said: “Question Authority.” Back then “Question Authority” meant “do not respect authority” or “rebel against authority”. We need to respect authority but the question then becomes: How do we respect authority and yet realize that the person of authority may not be knowledgeable in what they’re saying or doing?
I guess the answer here is to regard everything as opinion. Don’t put too much importance on the opinion unless you know that the giver has expertise in what they are talking about. At some point, you may decide that you just want to get away from it all and go live in the woods.
By the way, bloggers are not exempt here. You must realize that their writing is just opinion also and most bloggers have little expertise in their topic. They have a desire to say something, so they write a piece like this. Could this be the motivation of stars, reporters, and politicians also? I guess it’s all ego.
